Frequently Asked Questions about Habano Wrapper Cigars
Habano wrapper is tobacco grown from Cuban seed outside Cuba, mainly in Nicaragua and Ecuador. It is not a Cuban-made cigar: the name refers to the seed variety, which produces an oily, reddish-brown leaf with a fuller, spicier profile than Connecticut or Sumatra wrappers.
Origin sets the base character: Habano Nicaragua tends to be spicier and fuller, while Habano Ecuador is generally more refined. From there, the rest of the name marks a process or hybrid. Habano 2000 Nicaragua and Habano Oscuro 2000 use a specific hybrid seed and, in the Oscuro version, longer fermentation for a darker, richer leaf. Habano Ecuador Oscura is the darker-fermented take on standard Habano Ecuador. Habano Rosado and Habano Rosado Ecuador are a lighter, reddish-toned leaf with a slightly sweeter edge, and Habano Sun Grown Ecuador is grown in direct sun rather than under shade, giving it a thicker, more robust leaf.
Habano wrapper cigars generally run medium to full in body, with more spice, pepper and earthiness than a Connecticut or Sumatra wrapper. Oscuro and 2000 versions push furthest into rich, dark-fermented territory; Rosado versions are milder and slightly sweeter; Sun Grown adds extra strength and a more rustic edge. It suits smokers who want more kick without going as dark as a full Maduro.
