Frequently Asked Questions about Short Cigars
A short cigar is a hand-rolled vitola of up to 4.5 inches (114 mm) with a narrow ring gauge, usually 46 or less. Classic examples are the Minuto, Perla, Reyes, Petit Corona and Half Corona formats. Length is what defines the category, not strength: a short cigar can be mild or full-bodied, and it uses the same long-filler blend as its full-size counterparts.
Between 20 and 30 minutes for most formats, and up to 40 minutes for the thicker ones such as a short robusto. The narrower the ring gauge, the shorter the smoke. Puff slowly, small formats heat up faster than a churchill and can turn bitter if you rush them.
A cigarillo or mini is machine-made, filled with short filler and usually smoked in under 10 minutes. A short cigar is a premium hand-rolled cigar with long filler: the same tobaccos, the same construction and the same flavor profile as a full-size cigar, simply in a smaller format.
