Frequently Asked Questions about Reyes Cigars
“Shape” refers to a cigar’s overall form and proportions (primarily its length and ring gauge) and whether it is a straight-sided parejo (like a Robusto or Churchill) or a figurado (tapered or rounded ends such as a Torpedo or Pyramid). Shape is often called the vitola and helps determine the cigar’s appearance, draw, and how flavors develop.
Length largely determines smoking time (longer cigars take longer to smoke), while ring gauge affects how much filler and binder contact the wrapper and therefore the intensity and balance of flavors. Thicker gauges generally deliver a cooler, fuller draw and can showcase more complex blends, whereas slimmer cigars concentrate wrapper and filler flavors and often smoke hotter and faster. Figurado shapes can concentrate or change flavor progression because of their changing diameter.
Parejos are usually cut with a straight/guilotine cutter or punch. Figurados with tapered heads (torpedo, belicoso, pyramid) often work best with a V-cutter or careful straight cut near the cap to preserve the shape and draw; some Perfectos require a small snip at the head rather than a deep cut. When lighting, rotate the cigar and toast the foot evenly to ensure an even burn regardless of shape.
Shape itself doesn’t change the fundamental storage requirements (maintain stable temperature and humidity) but larger ring gauges and longer cigars take more space and can alter airflow in a humidor if packed tightly. Aging affects blends similarly across shapes, though ring gauge can influence how quickly flavors mellow since thicker cigars have more filler mass relative to wrapper surface.
