Frequently Asked Questions about Perfecto Cigars
A Perfecto is a cigar vitola characterized by a closed, tapered head, a bulging middle, and often a closed or tapered foot. Its distinctive hourglass or torpedo-like profile requires skilled rolling and differs from standard parejos (straight-sided) cigars.
The changing diameter from head to middle to foot alters airflow and concentration of smoke, which can intensify flavors and change the smoking experience as you progress. Draw can be more resistant at the tapered ends and more open in the middle; a well-rolled Perfecto balances these changes for an even, flavorful progression.
Cutting a Perfecto requires precision. Many smokers use a V-cutter to open the tapered head without removing too much wrapper, or carefully snip the very tip with a sharp cigar scissors. Avoid guillotines that remove excessive wrapper near the taper, and always test a small cut first to preserve construction.
Smoking time varies with length and ring gauge, but most Perfectos last about 30–90 minutes. Shorter, narrower Perfectos tend toward the lower end, while larger, thicker examples extend into longer sessions. Construction and how you smoke (puff frequency, resting) also affect duration.
Because Perfectos require experienced rollers to form the tapered ends and maintain consistent draw, they can be more time-consuming to produce. This often makes them pricier than comparable parejos, especially for handmade, high-quality examples from premium manufacturers.
Store Perfectos the same as other premium cigars: in a humidor at about 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F (18–21°C). Their tapered ends are sealed, so ensure proper humidification to keep the wrappers supple and to avoid split or burst tips during smoking.
